Why Companies are Choosing Paper-Based Packaging

In this article you are going to be acknowledged about the paper packaging, types of paper packaging, and their benefits.

Paper packaging are divided into 3 categories

  • Folded cartons

  • Corrugated box

  • Rigid box

Corrugated Boxes

Corrugated boxes are probably the most commonly used boxes to ship products. It is the humble ground box that you see around yourself. When you order something online from many e-commerce websites like Amazon, Flipkart, or the bomb, the brown box you get is the corrugated box.

It’s called the corrugated box because the inner wavy layer of cardboard is produced by a process called corrugation.

Common Applications

So let’s have a look at some of the common applications of corrugated boxes.

E-Commerce is the only industry which is highly dependent on corrugated boxes rather than custom kraft paper boxes. Order something online and there is a high chance that you will receive your product in a corrugated box.

Corrugated boxes are also highly used in the food industry. Go to the Pizza Hut or Domino’s and the box you receive your pizza in is a corrugated box.

Corrugated boxes are used almost in all industries which require any sort of manufacturing, trading, or transport of goods.

Pros

  • The multiple layers of paper and the wavy structure of the inner layers provides cushioning against any sort of vibration, compression, or shocks and keeps the contents inside the box safe and sound.

  •  Corrugated boxes are also highly economical and customizable.

  • There are a wide variety of design and printing options for you to choose from like printed cardboard boxes.

  • They are also easy to handle.

Cons

  • Weather conditions may disturb the properties and structure of the corrugated box.

  • The same box might behave differently in summers and winters.

  • Compared to non corrugated boxes, the surface of corrugated boxes are not as smooth, which might impact the asthetic appeal of the package.

  • Corrugated boxes may deform under extreme pressure by stacking.

Folded Cartons

Folded cartons are collapsible in nature which means they can be flattened, and that allows them to be shipped easily so they don’t cover a lot of volume.

Common Applications

Let’s explore some of the common applications of folded cartons.

Most cosmetics products like perfumes, soaps, and personal care products are majorly in folded cards. The medical industry is highly dependent on folded cartons to pack capsules, tablets, eye drops, and a wide variety of other drugs.

Folding cartons are widely used in the food industries to pack burgers, cakes and cereals as well.

Pros

  • They are lightweight.

  • Easily customizable.

  • They are a great option for personalized packaging.

  • They are also the most economical of the three categories of paper packaging.

  • They have got the lowest shipping cost and fastest production.

Cons

  • In some of the areas where folding cartons are not the ideal option.

  • Folding cartons are not suitable for heavy products, they’re also not sturdy enough as they can get deformed easily.

  • Folding cartons are also not the best option for weather proofing. If there is no protective layer inside, water can easily damage the contents of the package.

Rigid Boxes

This type of box has a rigid structure; it can not be folded or flattened like corrugated boxes or folding cartons.

Common Applications

So now let’s have a look at some common applications of rigid boxes.

Most mobile phone manufacturers use rigid boxes as their choice of packaging. Rigid boxes are also often used to pack sweets.

So, If you ever go to Holiday Arms or Beacon Villa, the box that carries the sweets inside is a rigid box. A lot of chocolates, perfumes, and confectionery items are commonly packed in rigid boxes.

Pros

  • Rigid boxes are ways to earlier and stronger and then corrugated boxes and folding cartons.

  • The straight posture and edges provide the box with the finest finishing.

  • The packaging is done faster.

Cons

  • Rigid boxes do not require any type of folding. They are non collapsible and cannot be flattened and cover a lot of volume while shipping which brings up your shipping cost and number of boxes that you can ship is also lower.

  • Beside the shipping cost the manufacturing of the rigid boxes is also much more expensive as compared to corrugated boxes and folding cartons.

  • Rigid boxes are also considerably heavy and not a great option when you are looking for something which is lightweight.
